The first bristle toothbrush , with handle and bristles attached to the head of handle , was invited . A Chinese emperor used the neck hair of wild boars and hogs for the brush . Then the hairs were fixed onto a bone or bamboo handle . The invention was brought to England but people there found the boar or hog hairs too stiff and changed them with horse hairs . The use of animal hairs stopped when nylon was invented in the twentieth century .
